01  How it works

Two ways to grab.

Paste a link into the app, or click the browser extension and let Viddlr do the rest. Either way you're three steps from done.

In the app Paste a link
Paste the URL
Copy a link from YouTube, TikTok, Vimeo, or any of 1,800+ sites. Press ⌘V inside Viddlr and it pastes instantly, or drag the link straight onto the window.
Choose your format
Pick Video (MP4) or Audio (MP3). Select a quality preset if you like: Best Quality, 4K, 1080p, or lower. Smart Trim kicks in automatically for YouTube videos.
Hit Download
Press ↵ or click the button. The file lands in your chosen folder: sponsor-free, subtitle-attached, and ready to play.
In your browser The Viddlr extension
Install it once
Chrome, Brave and Safari get their copy from inside Viddlr: Safari's only needs switching on in Settings ▸ Extensions, and Chrome and Brave load theirs from the one-time setup banner the first time you open the app. From then on it lives in your browser toolbar.
Click it & pick a format
On any video page, click the Viddlr icon in your toolbar. It reads the page's URL automatically. Just toggle Video (MP4) or Audio (MP3). Nothing to copy or paste.
Send to Viddlr
Hit Send to Viddlr, or press ⌘⇧Y to skip the popup entirely. Viddlr opens and the download starts on its own.

02  Features

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

Viddlr wraps the industry-standard yt-dlp engine in a clean native interface you'll actually enjoy using.

1,800+ Sites
YouTube, TikTok, Vimeo, Twitter/X, Instagram, Twitch, Reddit, Facebook, Dailymotion, Bilibili, and thousands more. If yt-dlp supports it, Viddlr downloads it.
Smart Trim
Automatically finds sponsor segments, self-promotion, intros, outros, and interaction reminders using the SponsorBlock community database, then either cuts them out before the file is saved, or leaves the video whole and marks them as chapters you can skip.
YouTube Only
MP3 Extraction
Switch to Audio mode for instant high-quality MP3 extraction. Perfect for podcasts, music, and lecture recordings.
Playlist & Series
Download entire playlists or YouTube channels at once. Viddlr tracks what you've already downloaded and skips duplicates automatically, and every entry is judged on its own, so a video that was pulled or made private says why instead of landing in your history as a file you never got.
Bulk Add Links
Drop a list of links (or a .txt file of them) onto Viddlr to queue them all at once. Pasting or typing several links does the same, and the new Import button opens the same .txt from a file picker, so the list is reachable without a mouse.
Download Several at Once
Run up to 3 downloads in parallel instead of waiting in line. Set the number in Settings, or leave it at 1 for the classic one-at-a-time flow.
New in 2.1.12
Resume Your Queue
Quit with downloads still waiting and Viddlr remembers. Next launch, it offers to pick up right where you left off, nothing lost.
New in 2.1.12
A History That Sorts
Every download you have made, ordered by title, site, date or size. Click a heading to sort, and click it again to reverse. Viddlr remembers the order you chose, and the search box narrows it further, accents and all, so cafe finds Café.
New in 2.2.0
Proxy Support
On a network that blocks the site you are downloading from? Point Viddlr at an HTTP, HTTPS or SOCKS proxy in Settings and it routes your downloads through it. Nothing else in Viddlr uses it.
New in 2.2.0
13 Languages
Viddlr's interface speaks 13 languages out of the box: German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Simplified Chinese. It follows your Mac's system language, or you can pick one yourself from the in-app flag picker. Whole window, every sheet.
Dark, Light, and Readable
Viddlr follows your Mac's appearance, or you can pin it to Light or Dark from Settings. The whole window changes, title bar included. Every screen is built to WCAG 2.1 AA: text clears the contrast bar, every control can be reached and used from the keyboard, VoiceOver is told what each one is, and Reduce Motion turns the animations off.
Quality Control
Choose Best Quality, 4K, 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. Viddlr merges separate video and audio streams for maximum quality automatically, and on a Mac that can't play AV1 (most Macs from before the M3) it picks H.264 up to 1080p, so the file opens in QuickTime.
Browser Extensions
One extension, in Chrome, Brave and Safari. Click the Viddlr icon on any video page, pick Video or MP3, and hit Send, or press ⌘⇧Y to skip the popup. The URL goes straight to Viddlr, no copy-paste.
Cookie-Based Auth
Turn on Browser cookies in Settings and Viddlr signs in as you do, reading cookies from Chrome, Brave, Edge, Firefox, Vivaldi, Opera, Chromium or Safari for private, age-restricted or members-only content. It is off until you ask for it, and you name the browser you are actually signed into.
Subtitles
Optionally download auto-generated or community subtitles as .srt files, or write them straight into the MP4 so they travel with the video and switch on in any player. An MP3 has nowhere to put a subtitle track, so audio-only downloads are unaffected.
New in 2.2.0
Fast & Reliable
Multi-threaded fragment fetching, automatic retries, throttle detection, and embedded metadata, all handled for you in the background.
Keyboard-First
⌘V pastes and focuses. Return downloads. V/A switches format. ⌘⇧Y sends from Chrome, Brave or Safari. Press ? for the full cheat-sheet. No mouse required.

Download Viddlr for macOS, Free

Version 2.4.5 · Released October 16, 2026 · Free updates forever

macOS 13 Ventura or later, including macOS 27 Golden Gate · Apple Silicon or Intel
Everything Viddlr needs (including the yt-dlp download engine and ffmpeg) is built right into the app. Nothing else to install.
Using Firefox?
There is no Viddlr add-on for Firefox yet. Mozilla has to sign it before Firefox will install one, and that has not happened. Only Chrome, Brave and Safari get the extension today, and the app carries it for all three. Everything else works in Firefox: paste a URL straight into Viddlr, and turn on Browser cookies in Settings to have Viddlr sign in the way your Firefox profile already does.
Opening the app the first time
Viddlr is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens cleanly the first time: no Open Anyway trip through System Settings, no Terminal. Open the DMG, drag Viddlr into Applications, and launch it.
Check the file you downloaded
Viddlr is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, and macOS checks that every time you open it. That is the check that catches a file altered on its way to you. To confirm it yourself, compare the SHA-256 of your copy with the one published for the Viddlr.dmg this page serves.
SHA-256 checksum
Published checksum
Run this on your download and compare
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Viddlr.dmg

Or have your Mac compare them for you: save Viddlr.dmg.sha256 beside the download and run shasum -a 256 -c Viddlr.dmg.sha256.

07  FAQ

Common questions.

Is this legal?
Downloading videos for personal use is legal in most jurisdictions. Always respect copyright and a platform's Terms of Service. Don't redistribute downloaded content.
Does Viddlr require an internet connection?
Yes, to download videos. Business license keys are validated online once per day. If you're offline, Viddlr uses a 72-hour cached validation grace period. Personal use needs no license at all.
How does the business license work?
Viddlr is free for personal and commercial use. No license key needed. If you find it useful at work, you can support development from the tip jar at the bottom of the page.
What happens when YouTube changes things?
Viddlr uses yt-dlp under the hood. Clicking Update yt-dlp in the app's footer is usually all that's needed to fix any extraction issues. Updates are free forever.
How does Smart Trim work?
Viddlr uses the SponsorBlock community database to find sponsor segments, intros, outros, and other filler in YouTube videos, before the file is saved to your disk. You choose what happens to them: Cut them out, which is the default, or Mark as chapters, which keeps the video whole and writes each segment in as a chapter your player can skip over.
How do I set up the browser extension?
It works in Chrome, Brave and Safari, and the app shows you the steps for yours: open Viddlr and click + Extension. Safari's copy is installed with the app already: switch it on in Safari ▸ Settings ▸ Extensions. Chrome and Brave load the same bundled copy from the one-time setup banner the first time you open the app, each from its own tab in that sheet. There is no Firefox add-on yet. Once the extension is in place you have two ways to grab a video: click the Viddlr icon in your browser's toolbar and hit Send to Viddlr, or just press ⌘⇧Y on any video page. Either way, the URL goes straight to Viddlr, no copy-paste.
Can Viddlr download from Netflix, Disney+, or Spotify?
No. These services use DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption that yt-dlp cannot legally bypass. Viddlr works with platforms that stream video openly: YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok, Twitch, and 1,800+ others. Spotify audio is also DRM-protected; SoundCloud and Bandcamp are not.
How do I update Viddlr itself?
Viddlr updates itself. It checks about once a week and, when a new version is out, shows you what changed and offers to install it in place. The download is signature-checked, and one that doesn't verify is refused. You can also check on demand, turn the automatic check off in the update panel, or download the DMG from this page and drag it into Applications yourself. Your preferences and history carry over. Separately, the download engine (yt-dlp) updates itself from the app footer. That is the faster fix for a YouTube 403, and it is not an app update.

Built on open source

Viddlr stands on giants.

Two free, community-run projects do the hardest work inside Viddlr. They don't cost you a cent, so please consider supporting them directly.

yt-dlp
The download engine · 1,800+ sites

Every grab runs on yt-dlp, the tirelessly maintained downloader that keeps working through every site change. The project takes no donations, so the best way to help is a star or a contribution on GitHub.

SponsorBlock
Powers Smart Trim

Smart Trim skips sponsors, intros, and self-promo using SponsorBlock's crowd-sourced segment database, built and shared freely by thousands of volunteers. Donations keep its servers running.

Viddlr compared with other Mac video downloaders

Viddlr is a native Mac front end for yt-dlp (the open-source extractor that most download tools are built on) with SponsorBlock segment removal built in.

Prices and capabilities checked August 2026. Each maker’s own site is the authority on its side of this table.

Viddlr compared with Downie, yt-dlp and 4K Video Downloader Plus
Capability Viddlr Downie yt-dlp 4K Video Downloader Plus
Price Free, including commercial use $19.99 one-time Free, open source $25 lifetime
Interface Native Mac app Native Mac app Command line Cross-platform app
Extractor yt-dlp Charlie Monroe's own yt-dlp itself Its own
Skips sponsor segments Yes, via SponsorBlock No Yes, with flags No
Runs on your Mac, no account Yes Yes Yes Yes

When to use something else

Downie has its own extractors rather than riding on yt-dlp, which means it sometimes keeps working on a site the day yt-dlp breaks. It is also faster and more polished than anything free. If you download constantly, it earns the $19.99. yt-dlp itself is free and always the most current, if a terminal doesn't bother you. Viddlr's case is narrower: yt-dlp's coverage, in a window, with the sponsor segments already gone.

If this is what you came here to solve

I want the video without the sponsor read and the intro
SponsorBlock's community timings are applied at download, so the file you get is already cut.
A site stopped working
Viddlr rides yt-dlp, so a site fix arrives when yt-dlp ships one. It is not waiting on us.
I want an MP3, not a video
Pick audio-only and the track is extracted without a separate conversion step.
