Release notes
Changelog
Why this starts at 0.1.1. The Mac build has its own much longer history and version
line. Windows starts its own numbering rather than pretending to a past it doesn't have: the two
builds share a toolkit design and a license key, not a version number.

0.1.1
Beta
August 18, 2026
First private build of Stapl for Windows: a ground-up port to Tauri, with Ghostscript and Tesseract standing in for the macOS frameworks the Mac build leans on for compression, page rendering and OCR.
The toolkit
- Windows port of the full toolkit: Merge, Organize, Rotate, Compress, OCR, Unlock, Protect,
Watermark, Page Numbers, Crop, Redact, Metadata, PDF → Images, Images → PDF, Batch, Extract Text
and Fill & Sign, built on a Tauri/Rust core with Windows
gsand Tesseract sidecars bundled into the installer. - New tool: Fill & Sign. Fill a PDF's form fields and drop a signature onto the page, typed in a handwriting-style font or drawn with the mouse or trackpad.
- New tool: Extract Text. Pull a PDF's selectable text into a plain
.txtfile, entirely on-device. - Drop a PDF straight onto the Home screen to pick which tool opens it, or drop several at once to send them straight to Merge.
- Redact gained a full-window zoom view with numeric region entry, so small text, numbers and signatures are easy to black out precisely.
- Batch now shows aggregate progress across the whole folder, and same-name output collisions get a numbered suffix instead of silently overwriting each other.
- Fixed a 0-page dead end in Organize and Rotate on a damaged PDF, and hardened the PDF engines against hostile input with a deeper fuzz-testing round.
- Every result now offers a one-click Open or Show in Explorer right alongside the save confirmation, and each tool remembers its own last-used settings between sessions.
- A
Ctrl Kcommand palette jumps to any tool from anywhere, with a searchable Home screen and a "Recent" row of your last-used tools.
Licensing & updates
- Business licensing added: activate a key from the License screen for $5 one-time per computer. Personal use makes no license-server call at all; validating a key sends only the key, the app version, your device name, and a one-way hashed machine identifier, never anything about your documents.
- A visible Check for Updates button was added to the toolbar, alongside silent automatic checks about once a week and a badge when a new version is out, with a toggle to turn the automatic check off.
- Fixed the update feed to report the version you're actually running, so update counts break down correctly by version instead of collapsing into one bucket.
- Restored the review-prompt and Report-an-Issue entry points on Windows, plus a low-pressure, once-only prompt to support twoplus11 after extended use.
Windows fit & finish
- Segoe UI Variable throughout, replacing the inherited Apple font stack that fell through to a generic sans-serif on Windows.
- The title bar now matches the app's light/dark theme via DWM, including a fix for a theme toggle click that could be dropped.
- The Windows icon set was regenerated from the Mac app's current staple design, and the color tokens were realigned to the same neutral-surface, single-hue system the rest of the twoplus11 fleet uses. Stapl had been the one app still on a separate warm "paper & ink" palette.
- Distribution and code-signing tooling was added for this build (Stapl had none until this release), including a fix for Trusted Signing metadata that a UTF-8 BOM was silently corrupting.
- Fixed a WCAG 2.1 AA contrast failure, confirmed by an axe-core and manual contrast audit, and gave the twoplus11 wordmark's accent an accessible, theme-aware blue.
Language & accessibility
- 13 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (BR), Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Korean, with tag-style badges rather than flags, matching Mac parity.
- Full keyboard control via the command palette and focus-trapped dialogs, with focus correctly returned to the triggering control on close.
- Caps Lock warnings in the Protect and Unlock password fields, so a mistyped-case password doesn't silently fail.
Known in this beta
- Redact is manual-only: it does not yet auto-find emails, phone numbers, or card numbers the way the Mac build's newest release does.
- Updates are check-and-download, not install-in-place: the toolbar tells you when a new version is out, but you run the new installer yourself rather than Stapl updating itself automatically.
- SmartScreen may still warn on first download regardless of code-signing status; reputation for a brand-new file builds up over time and downloads. See the install notes.
- No screen-reader pass with Narrator or NVDA has been done by a human yet. The accessibility work is tested structurally and audited with axe-core, but assistive technology has not driven the app end to end. If you use one, that feedback is the most valuable thing you could send.
