Release notes
Changelog
Why this starts at 1.0.1. The Mac build has its own longer history and is further along in its
numbering. Windows starts its own version line rather than pretending to a past it doesn't have, and this really
is the first build anyone outside this beta has been able to install: an earlier packaging bug meant the
installer itself never actually got produced until this release. The two builds share a design and a license
key, not a version number.

1.0.2
Beta
September 2026
A fix for 1.0.1, which closed as soon as it opened for everyone who installed it. If you have 1.0.1, download this one and install it over the top.
Fixes
- GifMint starts again. The 1.0.1 installer carried the build meant for a packaged Store install, which cannot start from an ordinary install folder, so the app quit at launch every time. 1.0.2 is built for the installer it ships in.
Privacy
- Your computer's name is no longer sent when GifMint checks a license. The privacy page already said it wasn't; now the app matches the page.
1.0.1
Beta
August 2026
First installable Windows release. A native WinUI 3 rebuild of the tray-based capture workflow, with most of the Mac build's core recording and trimming tools, plus the accessibility work that's been going into it release after release.
Capture
- Three capture modes: full screen, a single window (picked from a searchable thumbnail grid), or a drag-selected area with a dashed guide border, a live width × height readout, and a warning if the drag is too small to use.
- Frame rate 5-24 fps and resolution 25-100% scale, both sliders showing the live output pixel size, with a warning banner if your settings are likely to produce a large file.
- Optional countdown (1-30s) before recording starts, and an auto-stop timer (5-300s) so you don't have to watch the clock.
- A floating HUD tracks elapsed time and frame count while you record, with a Stop button and an Escape-key shortcut.
- Global hotkey
Win Shift Gstarts and stops recording from anywhere, using your last-used settings.
Preview & export
- Drag trim handles to cut the start and end of a recording after the fact.
- Reverse and Boomerang (forward-then-reverse) playback, without re-recording anything.
- Right-click any frame to copy or save just that frame as a PNG.
- Drag the finished GIF straight out of the preview window into another app.
- Auto-copy skips the preview and puts the finished GIF on your clipboard the moment recording stops. A GIF too large to copy is saved automatically and revealed in File Explorer instead of silently failing.
- Optional 3-second branded end card appended to the GIF, off by default.
- The preview window remembers its size and position between opens.
Windows fit & finish
- Per-user install into
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\GifMint. No UAC prompt, no admin rights. The installer bundles and installs the Windows App SDK 1.6 runtime automatically, and checks for the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime before it starts. - Pure system-tray presence: no taskbar entry for the hidden background host.
- Light / Dark / System appearance picker, matching the Mac build's own picker; the whole app repaints live without a restart.
- Adopted the twoplus11 fleet color system: GifMint's own accent (mint) throughout the app UI, replacing an earlier shared placeholder scheme.
- Settings and license writes are serialized and atomic, so an app close mid-write can't corrupt them.
- Business licensing, Check for Updates, and a tray Report-an-Issue action, matching the rest of the twoplus11 Windows lineup.
- Fixed: the update check was offering Windows users an update built for macOS, which could never actually install. It now correctly identifies itself as the Windows build.
- DPI-aware window sizing throughout, so panels stay correctly sized at non-100% Windows text scaling.
Accessibility
- WCAG 2.1 AA gate in the release process, with 13 contrast and naming violations it found already fixed.
- Narrator live regions and accessible names across capture, preview, and picker windows: frame counts, encode progress, area-selection dimensions, and error banners are all announced as they change.
- A full keyboard path through every window, 44×44px minimum touch targets, and Windows High Contrast support.
- Tested structurally and against automated contrast/naming checks; a human screen-reader pass with Narrator or NVDA hasn't been logged yet. If you use one, that feedback is the most valuable thing you could send.
Known in this beta
- This build is not code-signed yet, so Windows will very likely show an "Unknown publisher" warning on first run. See the install notes.
- MP4 export and the Mac build's "shrink to a size limit" tool aren't in this Windows build yet; GIF and single-frame PNG export are.
- The Mac build's 13-language interface hasn't been ported to Windows yet; this beta is English only.
- Multi-monitor and per-monitor DPI-scaled capture haven't had a wide beta pass; see the beta feedback section if that's your setup.
