Release notes
Changelog
Why this starts at 1.0.0. The Mac build has its own longer history and is further along in its
numbering. Windows starts its own version line at 1.0.0 rather than pretending to a past it doesn't have.
The two builds share an engine design and a commercial-license key, not a version number.

Beta
August 18, 2026
First Windows release. A copy engine built from scratch on Win32 APIs (not a wrapper around the Mac build) around the same core guarantees, plus a couple of things the Mac build has no equivalent for.
The engine
- Never aborts on one file. An unreadable file costs one line in the end-of-job report, with a reason and a Windows error code, and the job keeps going. Copy the report as text or save the failures as CSV.
- Collisions never interrupt a running job. A name that's already taken is recorded and walked past; the default, Ask me afterwards, brings the whole list back as a review sheet once the transfer finishes, with an apply-to-the-rest option. Skip, Replace and Replace-if-newer are also available as immediate, per-job settings.
- Pause and resume mid-file, at a chunk boundary. Pausing flushes to disk first, so a pause is always a safe moment to unplug.
- Survives an unplugged drive. The job waits for the volume, then continues from the last durable checkpoint. Progress is checkpointed to disk every 64 MB, so at most 64 MB is ever redone. Resume survives quitting the app entirely, too.
- Nothing half-written wears a real name. Content goes to a
.copyr-partfile and is renamed into place only once it's complete and, if requested, verified. - Optional SHA-256 verification, off by default (it roughly halves throughput). Resuming a verified job re-hashes the already-written prefix from the source, not the destination, so the check can't trivially pass against itself.
- Move is a per-job choice next to Copy, never a saved default. Choosing it turns verification on and deletes each original only once its copy is completely written and checksummed.
Honest preflight, honest speed
- Before a byte moves: free space actually available to you (via
GetDiskFreeSpaceEx, so a per-user quota is respected rather than discovered when the disk fills), which files are OneDrive placeholders about to be downloaded, anything already unreadable, and whether the destination is a network location. - A live speed graph of the last minute runs alongside a plain-language and tabular readout of the same numbers, because a shape can't be the only channel.
Windows-native, not ported
- Real timestamps. Created, modified and accessed dates are set with the Win32
SetFileTimecall, tried before the ordinary Python fallback, which can't set "Date created" at all. - Long paths. Every filesystem call goes through a
\\?\-prefixing helper, so a destination past the old 260-character limit works instead of failing three hours in. The prefixed spelling never reaches the UI, the clipboard, or File Explorer. - Junctions and reparse points are never followed. That's how a folder walk finds a cycle. They're recreated as real links where Windows allows it (Developer Mode or elevation), and recorded as an advisory where it doesn't.
- NTFS alternate data streams are not copied by default. Carrying them forward would propagate the downloaded-from-the-internet mark onto files you made yourself; an opt-in checkbox carries them when you actually want that, and the preflight reports which way it went either way.
Windows fit & finish
- Per-user install into
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Copyr: no UAC prompt, no admin rights. - The title bar follows the app's light/dark setting, and Windows 11 corner rounding is requested explicitly rather than left to chance.
- Segoe UI Variable throughout. The inherited Apple font families are gone.
- Self-update in place, anchored to Authenticode rather than a custom signing scheme: every redirect hop is re-checked against an allow-listed host, the downloaded installer's signature subject must match our signing identity, its version must match what the server advertised, and that version must actually be newer. Any failed check deletes the download and sends you to the download page instead of running it.
Language & accessibility
- 13 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (BR), Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean. The language follows your Windows display-language order.
- WCAG 2.1 AA: a full keyboard path (
Ctrl Oto choose files), Windows High Contrast support, reflow with no horizontal scrolling, and measured contrast in both light and dark. The speed graph's numbers are also available as plain text and a table, not only as a shape. - Structural UI tests and an axe-core accessibility audit run in CI on every change.
Known in this beta
- No right-click "Copy with Copyr" entry in File Explorer yet. Drag files onto the window,
or press
Ctrl Oto choose them. - No saved
checksums.sha256manifest (write one now, check a folder against it later) yet. The Mac build has this; this beta doesn't. - No one-click "retry just what failed" yet. A fresh job over the same files works in the meantime.
- SmartScreen may still warn on first download despite the signature; reputation builds per file. See the install notes.
- No screen-reader pass with Narrator or NVDA has been done by a human yet. The accessibility work is tested structurally and audited with axe-core, but assistive technology has not driven the app end to end. If you use one, that feedback is the most valuable thing you could send.
