Honest comparison
Liftr vs remove.bg
remove.bg is a web service: you upload a photo, it comes back cut out, and you pay per image. Liftr does the cut-out on your Mac with Apple's Vision model. For a Mac user working with their own photos, that changes both the cost and where the photo goes.
Prices and features checked August 2026. remove.bg’s own site is the authority on its side of this table.

Where remove.bg is the right choice
remove.bg is platform-independent — it works from any browser on any operating system, including a phone — and it has a proper API, so it can sit inside a server-side pipeline or an e-commerce workflow. Liftr can do neither: it is a Mac app, and it only ever runs on your machine. If you need background removal somewhere other than a Mac, or you need it automated on a server, remove.bg is the tool.
Questions
- Is Liftr really free?
- Personal use is free forever. Commercial use is a one-time $5 per computer.
- Does Liftr upload my photos?
- No. Removal runs on your Mac using Apple's Vision framework, with a CoreML fallback on Intel Macs. Your images never leave the machine, and Liftr works with the network off.
- How good are the edges?
- Vision handles most subjects cleanly, and Liftr adds edge refinement plus a touch-up brush with erase and restore modes for the cases it misses — hair and fur being the usual ones.
Liftr is free for personal use, runs entirely on your Mac, and needs no account.
